“The most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I'm here to help.” ― Ronald Reagan
Here’s my (hopefully) last Covid experience. But first, a short timeline of Omicron to set the stage:
November 11, 2021 a new variant of SARS-CoV-2 is detected in Botswana.
December 1, 2021 Omicron had spread to 20 different countries, including the US. US Cases: 150,499
Mid-December 2021 Omicron is considered a Major Imminent Threat. In The Netherlands, Dutch health experts recommend a full lockdown.
December 21, 2021 President Biden announces plans to buy 500 million Covid test kits. Some critics say that the test kits are too late and not enough to slow Omicron. US Cases: 194,319.
December 29, 2021 Whitehouse coronavirus response coordinator Jeff Zients states that contracts for the 500 million test kits will be signed “late next week”. US Cases: 511,371.
January 3, 2022 Dr. Scott Gottlieb Predicts Quick End for Omicron: ‘We’ll Be in the Throes of This’ for ‘Maybe a Month’. US Cases: 1,082,769.
January 7, 2022 Biden administration signs first contract for free rapid Covid-19 test distribution. US Cases: 778,560.
January 19, 2022 The Covid test kit website covidtests.gov goes live. Orders are expected to ship in 7 to 12 days. US Cases: 1,065,195.
February 4, 2022 According to Barron’s: Many Americans Are Still Waiting for Their Free Covid-19 Tests. US Cases: 302,256.
February 11, 2022 Many households have not received their Covid test kit. US Cases: 185,451.
When I heard that the Federal government was going to supply Covid test kits to the country, I thought that I should place an order for my home just to be safe.
So, on January 18th I placed my order:
I figured that by the end of January Covid would be raging and we’d all need the tests. The government was projecting that we’d have the kits in 7 to 12 days. Cool.
I waited. (Cue the Jeopardy final clue music….) And waited.
Finally, I received my kits on February 16 when Covid cases had declined to 115,254.
Ok, well at least I got my kit!
And then I turned it over…….
Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrg!
Thank God we have the government to protect us! Oh, and did you notice that the media’s coverage of the test kit shipments has evaporated? Makes you wonder……
