This week I achieved a major milestone. This is that story.
* * *
A little over three years ago my right hip started bothering me.
I put off seeing a doctor because, well, I’m not sure why.
But finally, I did see a doctor. After several months and a bunch of tests and procedures, doctor X (I won’t use his name for fear of a lawsuit) told me “Yes, you need a new hip. But I won’t do the procedure because you’re too fat.”
Not, lose weight and come back to see me, but a flat NO!
If I saw this guy on the street, I’d punch his lights out.
But really, he did me a big favor. I saw a different (and in the end a much better) doctor. He agreed with the witch doctor but this time it was different. He told me to lose 50 pounds and come back.
I dove into the challenge. I changed everything. No more “single serve” Hagen Daz ice cream pints every night. No more beer at the VFW. No more carbs.
The weight drained off me.
By the end of 2021 I’d lost over 50 pounds and my hip replacement surgery was scheduled for the next March.
But I didn’t stop there. My diet changed so radically that I was used to the reduced food intake. I didn’t go back to eating Hagen Daz every night. In fact, I may have only had ice cream once that summer. And to this day I rarely have it.
I stayed off bread and most carbs. Not to say that I didn’t have a sandwich once in a while, but it took me a couple of months to eat a loaf of bread.
And beer! I didn’t start drinking regular beer again. I switched to light beer.
I didn’t stress over my weight. I just lived my life.
I did weigh myself every morning. I saw my weight slowly drop. Yes, there were periods where I’d hit a plateau. Maybe my weight would increase. But I was never discouraged. Why? Because I was happy with my new diet.
Here’s a shock: when I had my knee replaced last month, I weighed myself the morning of the surgery and again two days later when I returned home. In two days, I gained 13 pounds!!! I guess they forced a lot of liquids into me. Oh, that and the hospital food was truly very good.
The knee’s healing process caused swelling to slowly lessen. And those 13 pounds slowly became one pound. It took three weeks to lose those 12.
Then, this week, that final pound dropped off. And then five more pounds dropped off.
As of this week, I’ve reached a milestone. I’ve lost 100 pounds since starting this journey.
I’m proud of my achievement, but I’m not done. My goal is to lose another 25 pounds. I know I can do it!
