You may recall that last fall we needed to put down Tracie’s little Morkie, Bella. (See Six Pounds of Love.) As you can imagine it was a very hard thing to do. After that sad experience Tracie was adamant that she didn’t want another dog.
Until a few weeks ago.
It all started with us driving by the Delaware Humane Association’s branch in Rehoboth Beach. We were headed to a movie and Tray saw the front window and we just had to stop. Their rules didn’t permit us to drop in and look at the animals but that kick-started the desire for another dog.
What kind of dog to get? A visit to akc.org and their puppy selector app helped some. Shepherd? Maybe. King Charles Spaniel? Really cute! Rottweiler? Large but steadfast. Another Morkie? No, we’d miss Bella too much. Oh, and the AKC puppies all cost thousands. I’m not cheap but I do have my limits.
After the AKC we started searching shelters. Lots of Pit-Bull mixes. Not for us. Lots of large dogs. Probably not the best choice for us.
Then we stumbled upon Petfinder.com and saw “Dude”. Dude looked like a medium-sized dog with about sixty different breed bloodlines. And a face that only a mother could love. We were hooked. Dude was at the Delaware Humane Association H.Q. up in Wilmington - a 90-minute drive - but we weren’t doing anything anyway so we jumped in the Jeep and took a ride.
Well. We met Dude. We would have adopted him but I’d have had to rent a horse trailer to tow behind the Jeep to get him home. Shall I say he was a bit larger than he looked in the picture? And unruly. Apparently, Dude had been chained up outside and had no inside manners. He barked. And jumped up. He was so big that we saw eye-to-eye when he jumped up with his paws on my shoulders. Dude’s tail would have laid waste to things on my end tables, lamps included. Not a good fit for us.
Recognizing that they had a couple of easy targets, the staff brought out a few other cute dogs who were very nice. But then they brought out “Jack” who is part Rat Terrier and is about three years old. He was a stray who was picked up in Louisiana. No one down there wanted him and he was flown to Delaware to try his luck on some soft-hearted Yankees. That’s us! Jack went home with us that afternoon. We’re fostering him until the DHA finishes some medical treatments and then he’ll be ours.
Jack is a super sweet boy. We’re still getting to know one-another but so far he’s been really easy to live with. He’s been here two weeks and hasn’t barked once. He’s housebroken and obviously had received some training because he heels and listens. Oh, and did I say he’s a super sweet boy?
Jack made himself at home and is now the love of our lives!

Covid, #2
Just when you thought you’d heard it all, The Jerusalem Post has a story about a study that shows “Pantyhose found to be [an] effective facemask hack for better protection” from Covid-19.
According to the story, “Scientists cut out a portion of the thigh section of pantyhose and placed it over participants' heads and masks, which allowed the pressure of the stretchy fabric to keep the mask on tight. Results showed that although using pantyhose as a seal was the best fit hack that kept the mask on tight, people disliked wearing it.”
For once I will show restraint and not make any jokes.
