Maybe you missed it in the news recently: “Crickets, Mealworms and Grasshoppers Are Human Food, EU Says”.
That title was enough to make me click on it.
I remember hearing about people eating chocolate-covered ants and chocolate-covered bees, but today it’s so much more than those novelty products.
The European Union recently approved house crickets, yellow mealworms and grasshoppers to be sold in frozen, dried and powdered forms. This will allow manufacturers to use insect protein in some products like cereal bars and dried pasta. Yum!
There are a number of companies that sell insects for human consumption. One, Entosense.com sells a number of products made from culinary insects like crickets, agave worms, black ants, and scorpions.
Entosense even sells a cookie making kit aimed at kids:
Baking cookies is a fun family activity to begin with. But, add an ounce of crickets and it becomes an adventure.
Tell your kids they’re about to make cookies with bugs and the fun begins.
See? Bugs can be fun!
But there is a serious side to all this.
According to the World Health Organization, global hunger is once again on the rise, after it had been falling steadily for over a decade.
As late as 2018 Yemen, South Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, the Central African Republic, Ukraine, Afghanistan, and Somalia are reporting crisis levels of hunger and food insecurity for more than 25% of their populations.
The United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) says that agricultural production worldwide will have to increase by 70% in order to feed a global population expected to reach 9.1 billion by 2050.
It’s hoped that insects can fill a portion of that increased food demand.
Another reason we should all be eating bugs is that it’s better for the environment. Makes sense – an ant colony farts a lot less than your typical cow.
According to the FAO two billion people around the world already eat raw or cooked insects, so perhaps we should consider edible insects too. In fact, a Cambodian delicacy is the Tarantula spider. Just be sure to remove the fangs before eating.
At least they’re not asking us to eat Soylent Green!

Well, Now We Know
An analysis by Johns Hopkins concludes “that lockdowns have had little to no public health effects, they have imposed enormous economic and social costs where they have been adopted. In consequence, lockdown policies are ill-founded and should be rejected as a pandemic policy instrument.”
Let’s hope that those in power follow the science.

Washington Commanders
Ok, if the Philadelphia Phillies are the Phils,
And the Baltimore Orioles are the Os,
And the Boston Red Sox are the Sox,
And the Jacksonville Jaguars are the Jags,
Then will the Washington Commanders be the Commies?
