It’s time for another edition of Oat Bran Kills1 where one day medical science tells us something is good for us and the next day they say same thing is deadly (or so it would seem).
So, here we go……
WINE
So, we’re always hearing about the benefits of drinking modest amounts of wine. In fact, here are 14 reasons that wine is good for you. Wine is healthy, right? Yup. Even scientists agree: over-40s can benefit from drinking up to two glasses of wine or bottles of beer every day.
Makes you feel good about all that wine you drink, doesn’t it? Well, not to be satisfied with the status quo, some jerks at King’s College in London had to ruin it. They found that drinking just four small glasses of wine a week can raise the risk of developing dementia. Party poopers!
BEER
As opposed to wine, the more plebeian beer doesn’t fare as well. In fact, there are any number of studies that will make you feel guilty while swilling your favorite brew.
Well, beer drinkers take heart. The American Chemical Society’s Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, showed that men who drank one lager each day had a more diverse colony of healthy gut microbes, compared to measurements taken before their daily beer regimen. Woo hoo! Viva beer gut! Any excuse to drink my favorite Yuengling Lager!
Whoa, wait a minute hombre. This is too good to be true. Surely there must be a mistake.
Yup. Turns out that consumption of beer and cider increased the COVID-19 risk, regardless of the frequency and amount of alcohol intake.
Drat!
MEDITERRANEAN DIET
You know how everyone raves about the Mediterranean diet. Even the Mayo Clinic says it’s healthy.
But beware. Unless you’re buying organic products there’s a Mediterranean diet warning: If you’re not going organic, you may be doing your body more harm than good.
Oh, and BTW, the Mediterranean diet is passé. Now the hot fad diet is the Nordic diet. Maybe one of these days they’ll pick a diet and stick to it. Like I should. *BLUSH*
CHOCOLATE
It’s the rare person who doesn’t love chocolate, whether white, milk or dark. For years we’ve heard that chocolate can be bad for you. Obesity, heart palpitations, acid reflux, risk of diabetes and kidney disease are all bad side effects of too much chocolate. But it’s sooooooo good! Besides feeding our guilty pleasures there must be some good in chocolate.
Well, there is. Chocolate has many health benefits. And there’s some even better news! “Dark chocolate really is good for you: from spicing up your sex life and making you more alert at work, to keeping your arteries healthy and brain sharp... it’s the power of cocoa.” Sounds like a delicious Viagra, doesn’t it?
Well, this just in… if all that good news isn’t enough, now we find out that chocolate can help lower high blood pressure too! Chocolate, is there nothing it can’t do?
FISH
We’re always told that eating fish is very healthy. Fish oil has major health benefits including improving brain health, lowering the risk of dementia, and lowering the risk of heart disease.
In fact, fish is like a miracle food. Well, almost.
This just in: eat fish twice a week - get melanoma. According to Britain’s National Health Service, eating fish twice a week makes you more likely to get melanoma. They don’t say whether you need to go out in the sun or not.
DAIRY
The same study that said you could get melanoma if you eat fish twice a week found that drinking too much cow's milk raises risk of prostate cancer. Can you believe it? Milk!
Just to let you know that science isn’t all bad, a new study found that an ice cream cone with nuts and chocolate ice cream was healthier than a multigrain bagel with raisins.
Score one for the good guys!
* * *
Well, I’m going to ignore all the “experts.” What do they know anyway? From now on I’m feasting on chocolate covered bacon-wrapped fish sticks with a nice cold beer. And a chocolate ice cream cone with nuts for dessert.
YUM!

Oat Bran Kills!
20 or 30 years ago, Clark de Leon wrote a daily column for the Philadelphia Inquirer. “The Scene” was a lighthearted look at Philadelphia, and society in general. One of Clark’s periodic stories was titled “Oat Bran Kills”, which spoofed science’s never-ending onslaught on established norms. He envisioned that eventually science will determine that one of the healthiest foods, oat bran, is actually deadly. We see this all the time today where one week eggs are deemed good for you and the next week some study says that eggs are poison that must be avoided at all costs.
I guess I'll drink alotta wine and eat lotsa white chocolate while it's still good for me... LOL ❤X❤X❤
